Review: Review: Nokia 7373

Nokia_7373.jpg

"...The 7373 is a decent update to the 7370. With a better 2-megapixel camera and expandable memory card slot, the 7373 works well as an everyday phone. Although some might be irked by the lack of accessible buttons when the phone is closed, which renders the phone almost useless when closed, the 7373 is still a good looking phone. Users looking for a functional and fashionable phone would not go wrong with the 7373."

Review: Nokia N80ie

Nokia_N80ie.jpg

"The Nokia N80ie is largely like its predecessor, the N80, keeping the same hardware but adding some nice software upgrades to enhance the Web experience of the smart phone. The N80ie now includes a download client that provides an easy way to get new apps on the handset. In addition, there are shortcuts for Yahoo Go, Gizmo VoIP, F-Secure, and other programs preloaded on the device for easy download. We were able to quickly and easily download several of the apps using T-Mobile service. Similar to the rest of the Nokia N series, the N80ie also features multimedia capabilities, including a 3-megapixel camera, a built-in music player, and an FM tuner. The quad-band device also has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and PIM functionality. The N80ie is available now and costs $499.99 for an unlocked version. For more information about the Nokia N80ie, please read our review of the Nokia N80...."

"New models offer balance of design and functionality for every lifestyle and budget

Amsterdam, The Netherlands - At Nokia's annual Capital Market Days taking place in Amsterdam today, Nokia announced four new mobile phones including three mid-range models -- the Nokia 6300, Nokia 6290 and the Nokia 6086 -- as well as the Nokia 2626 targeted to consumers in entry markets. All four models are expected to begin shipping in the first quarter of 2007.

Kai Oistamo, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Phones for Nokia unveiled the new models along with the company's vision for the next year. "These new products underscore our commitment to offer a range of mobile phones that give consumers a choice in selecting the right balance of technology and design to meet their lifestyle and budget."

The four new mobile phones launched at Nokia Capital Market Days are:

Nokia 6300 - Clean styling, compact size
The Nokia 6300 is a mid-range model that represents an evolution of the modern monoblock design. Less than 13.1mm thin, the slim Nokia 6300 has a stainless steel frame that adds both design interest and strength. In addition to its organic curves and appealing design, the Nokia 6300 offers a robust range of easy-to-use features. The estimated retail price of the Nokia 6300 is €250 before subsidies or taxes.

Nokia 6290 Smartphone - advanced technology made simple
The Nokia 6290 smartphone combines the collective power of S60 3rd Edition and 3G in an easy-to-use, attractively designed package. It supports a number of practical new features, multiple alarms and handy Quick Cover access keys which enable instant access to a wide range of the device's useful features, including an interactive world travel application. The estimated retail price of the Nokia 6290 is €325 before subsidies or taxes.

Nokia 6086 Cameraphone - Compelling feature set, seamless connectivity
The Nokia 6086 allows consumers to stay in touch - in any environment. This quad-band GSM and UMA-enabled cameraphone hides its sophisticated circuitry in a classic design with a large keypad and intuitive user menu. The estimated retail price of the Nokia 6086 is €200 before subsidies or taxes.

Review: Nokia 6233

nokia_6233.jpg

"The Nokia 6233 is certainly a worthy successor to the 6230i. However, with the Eseries and Nseries keeping Nokia occupied these days, I feel that the S40 series of phones is dying a slow death. Although the 6233 has a lot going for it, I am baffled by the fact that it has less on-board memory than the Nokia 6131. Granted, it does come with a 64MB microSD card, but the tiny amount of on-board memory is still unacceptable by today's standards. Users are most likely to get a higher capacity card anyway, and in the end, business users who prefer bar phones might feel short changed.

Nokia_6233_girl.jpg

In conclusion, I give the 6233 a Recommended rating, as it just does not pack enough punch to stand out amongst the rest of the S40 phones, unlike the 6230i or 6230 before it. If you need to make 3G video calls and prefer slimmer phones, the Sony Ericsson K610i....

Review: Nokia E62

Nokia_e62.jpg

"Nokia's new E62 smart phone may be tough for tech-savvy tightwads to ignore. Bargain-priced at $149 (plus a service contract via Cingular), the device offers a slew of useful smart-phone features, supports most popular e-mail platforms and provides handy applications for road warriors.

It's not a device for folks who need speed or for power users who love lots of bells, whistles and buttons to push. And if you want a touch screen, a camera or zippy 3G cellular data access such as that provided by EV-DO, you'll have to look elsewhere.....

Although there are some differences in terms of bundled applications and the use of RS-MMC instead of miniSD, the E60 is definitely the phone for business users who don't fancy using QWERTY equipped mobile phones. Review: Nokia 6708

nokia_6708.jpg

"...The Nokia 6708 is a dated machine. It is similar to the Sony Ericsson P900 in many ways, and if it were released three years ago, it might have been a real hit. I cannot recommend this phone, even if it is a slight improvement over the P900. There is still the fantastic P910i to recommend over this. Moreover, the terrible handwriting recognition software is a huge hurdle for anyone who wants to use this phone. Therefore, if you're looking for a touch screen phone running on the UIQ platform, go for the Sony Ericsson P910i or the new P990i. The Nokia 6708 is better off in the days of yesteryear."

Review: Nokia E70

Nokia_e70.jpg

"...The Nokia E70 is fully loaded and it's a fantastic handset. The Nokia E70 can do everything that the recently reviewed E61 can, and better yet, is can also snap pictures and record videos. Couple this with the high resolution display, and the E70 is clearly a winner. Although I do not really like the design or the time it takes for it to change from portrait to landscape and back, the E70 still has a lot going for it.

If Blackberry styled devices are not your thing, the E70 is the way to go. I give it a "Highly Recommended" rating, as there is no other phone as well equipped out there now as the E70. This rating comes with one caveat though: check the handset before purchase to see if the keyboard is labeled properly..."

"...This is an expensive phone ($799) but shows it, It has a style, Chic and solidity not found in many handsets, The camera is fantastic and the phone sports many features. The screen alone is worth half the price as it's a gem to view, You will see any detail in a taken photo or recieved MMS message.
It's simple to personalize and has a slot for a miniSD allowing plenty of storage.
It's just does pretty well everything you would ever realistically use in a handset.
As a bnus they appear to be pretty tough too even though they look fragile, the internals are set in die-cast.
Highly recommended, if you have the dosh ;-P, You might like to try and get the silver casing for it too (good luck and please post here!) it looks HOT in brushed silver. ...

Nokia Releases it's 8800

nokia_8800_sirocco.jpg

Inspired by the forces of nature and the sculptural beauty of the body, Nokia today unveiled its latest premium mobile phone, the Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition. Sensual by nature, intuitively beautiful by design, the Sirocco Edition's signature feature is a thumbprint, which perfectly matches the human hand. The soundtrack of the Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition was composed by the avant-garde musical pioneer Brian Eno, considered the "father of ambient music."

The Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition draws its name from the powerful desert-born wind that originates in the Sahara when a warm, dry air mass collides with the cooler, maritime air of the Mediterrean. The striking organic shape of the Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition references the inherent strength of the human form, a concept further implied by stainless steel polished surfaces and a scratch-resistant glass display window. Like its namesake, the Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition consists of two variants - light and dark, the light inspired by the hot, dry air mass, the dark by the cooler, humid one.

Review: Nokia N91

nokia_n91.jpg

"Nokia's N91 isn't exactly a new product - after all, it was launched back in April 2005 - but it's new to us, having just recently been released to the US market. Most of Nokia's Nseries entertainment-centric smartphones are focused on photography and video, but the N91 is targeted instead at the music lover.

Nokia_n91_inuse.jpg

The $599.99 N91's main claim to fame is its extra-large storage capacity, which is made possible by an internal 4 GB hard drive. (Nokia says this is enough to store as many as 3,000 songs, but if you typically encoded your music at a 128 kbps rate, that capacity is closer to about 1,000 songs....

Nokia_6131_4

"Flip phones and Nokia are not things that normally go together however that hasn't stopped Nokia trying to emulate the success of Motorola with hinged mobiles phones. Their latest entry is the Nokia 6131 flip phone and it's the subject of this weeks mobile review. The most striking thing about the Nokia 6131 happens before you even power it up, the sheer feel of this flip phone in your hand is something quite special.

nokia_6131_smile

It's lightweight at 112 grams and yet manages to feel substantial, the rear covering is not cheapo plastic but a textured warm rubber covering that oozes quality and gives you a good purchase at the same time. Measuring 92 x 48 x 20 mm we have to say that this is the perfect dimension for a flip phone and it is easy to open and close the flip especially with Nokias quick open button, it's been a while since a phone had a snazzy opening, in fact it was the Nokia Matrix phone that last had stockbrokers showing off their mobiles in the office.

"....I love the Nokia N91. Although its ease of use and the need to convert files into WMA before synchronization might still be lacking behind the iPod in terms of user friendliness, it has everything that a phone should have. "...I like this phone, but there are still a few bugs that need to be worked out. The biggest of which is that it doesn't seem to be compatible with the Bluetooth kit in my car, which is a problem for hands-free use. Another is the messaging application, which seems to hang and misbehave when there is no network coverage available. Speaking of network access, it won't connect properly to encrypted WiFi networks, so for now I just hop on to the open ones. Review: Nokia 9300

nokia_9300

"The 9300's physical dimensions may be a bit discouraging to some, as it's not too pocket friendly. At 2" x 5 1/8" x 3/4" with a weight of 5.9 ounces, the 9300 is has a nice heft to it and a size that makes the candy bar design hard to miss. On the downside, it might not be able to fit easily into pockets, as its stature limits the 9300 from becoming one of those slim handsets that can blend into the smallest of places. If you're looking for a phone that you won't notice while it's in your pocket, this may not be the best choice. It is, however, a solid device that never gives you the impression that it might break if mistreated. After an accidental drop or two, the phone didn't have a scratch on it and didn't suffer from any performance degradation. Ameliorating the size issue further, the 9300's diverse functionality makes it worth carrying around, and the demographic that the 9300 is aimed at will probably have a case or bag to throw the phone into. Functionality comes at a cost, however, and the phone comes with a hefty $499.99 price tag, making it one of the higher priced cell phones on the market. Savvy consumers can keep an eye out for various manufacturer and service provider rebates, however, and can find the phone for as little as $99.99....

Review: Nokia 6305i

nokia_6305i

"The admirably solid Nokia 6305i ($279.99 list), the first fruit of Nokia's relationship with the Korean phone giant Pantech, makes good voice calls. But since it lacks multimedia features such as removable memory and an MP3 player, it will have a hard time competing with the top rank of Verizon handsets, especially the much-beloved Motorola E815.

At 3.9 by 1.9 by 1 inches and 4.7 ounces, the 6305i is a big, heavy slider with a bright, attractive 176-by-220 color screen. It has an extendable antenna and somewhat confusing control keys arranged in three concentric circles below the screen. Sliding the screen up reveals an illuminated keypad of tightly spaced but decent-size keys. On the sides you'll find a speakerphone button, a camera button, and volume buttons. The good side of the 6305i's design is that it's quite solid; the bad side is that it's quite bulky....

In fact, despite Nokia’s reluctance to flip, there is already a clamshell handset in the N range – the N91. "...USER-UNFRIENDLY. Some features just seem badly engineered. Removing the back casing to install the phone subscription (sim) card was a headache. There are two tiny panels to squeeze on the sides. The experience was akin to opening a super-duper child-proofed bottle of aspirin. Also, two tiny but crucial navigation keys are camouflaged under the screen. I often miss them and hit the hang-up key instead.

And then there's the click. It should be firm and authoritative, like the shutting of a Mercedes door. But Nokia has gone a bit too far. Slide the phone shut and the click is more like a twack, loud and jolting. When I slide shut the phone, I find myself fretting that the impact will damage the machinery inside. This is silly, because everything about this phone signals strength. But still, I often brace it with my thumb. I think the Nokia engineers should loosen those springs a bit...

REVIEW: Nokia E61

Nokia_e61_solo

"It’s a huge relief to find that Nokia has finally discovered thin. Waifishness is, after all, the characteristic that has won Motorola a huge chunk of the mobile market, despite Moto’s notoriously unintuitive software. No such usability problems afflict the E61, which runs the same Symbian 9.1 operating system and Series 60 v3 front-end as the brilliant N80, winner of Stuff’s smartphone Supertest (July 2006).

Unlike the N80, the E61 has a hardy battery life – with all flavours of wireless enabled, it’ll still manage over a week on standby and a good couple of days of heavy usage. And how you’ll use it! With a fantastic thumb-operated QWERTY keyboard and bright QVGA screen (with an incredible 16million colours), the E61 is an uabashed joy to play with – not least because it features Nokia’s stunning new mobile browser.

Review: Nokia 6680

Nokia_6680

"Quick Take: The Nokia 6680 promises a powerful set of features in a somewhat mundane design vaguely reminiscent of the Nokia 6682. Most notably, the Symbian smart phone offers two digital cameras, which, along with the 3G UMTS support, can be used for videoconferencing. You'll also find Bluetooth, a document reader, an MMC slot, and a digital music player. The triband (GSM 900/1800/1900) phone is not offered by a U.S. carrier, but an unlocked model will work stateside. Review: Nokia 6305i

Nokia_6305ia

"The good: The Nokia 6305i offers 3G support, a speakerphone, and quality performance in a superior, stylish design.

The bad: With no Bluetooth or external memory slot, the Nokia 6305i's feature set is lacking. Also, picture quality wasn't great.

The bottom line: The Nokia 6305i is sexy and performs well, but its feature set doesn't back up its slick design...

Review: Nokia N91

nokia-N91

"At 113 mm tall, 55 mm wide and 22mm deep the N91 is a lot bigger than many phones, and actually rivals Orange’s SPV M600 for overall size. The bottom third of the casing is taken up with a series of controllers for music playback, and you need to slide this down to get to the number pad. When you do this, the handset grows to a huge 140mm tall.

The good news is that you can do most things without needing to use the slider, and when you do need the number pad its small wide keys are nicely raised from their surround, responsive, and very easy to hit.

That front fascia is one of several aspects of both software and hardware designed to emphasise the musicality of this handset: Nokia certainly does seem to have covered the bases and thought user needs through well....

Nokia E50 announced

"Nokia has added to its business-themed E-Series with the announcement of the E50. It's the smallest of the series, but still manages to pack in the features. One of the most interesting features is the ability for the E50 to tie into corporate phone networks, so it appears to be a regular office phone (with forwarding, extension, voicemail integration, etc). This can also save costs as it will redirect international calls through the corporate system....

Review: Nokia 7380

Nokia_7380_stack

"Phones have become as much fashion statements as communication tools, so it’s no surprise to see Nokia tapping into this with its new L’Amour collection. Designed for the terminally fashionable, this is the most innovative of the bunch. There’s no keypad; instead you use an iPod-like clickwheel and selection button to control everything.

Nokia_7380_pose

It’s laudable that this device wants to redefine the way people use phones. Unfortunately, it fails on just about every level. For a start, entering a number is incredibly difficult. You need to select each digit from a list on the screen by rotating and clicking the wheel. Selecting a contact is more straightforward, so if you have all your contacts stored on your computer, you should Bluetooth them over – the alternative is frustration, madness and quite possibly, RSI.

"When it comes to features, the 7370 tops the trio of L'Amour phones, with the most well-rounded feature set. It may not have the 2-megapixel camera that the stickish 7380 can claim, but I've found the 1mp number on board the 7370 does the job very nicely - and quickly too. Not having to wait around for the shutter to release, or for the software to wake up makes this a very nice, easy camera to use.

Review: Nokia 3650 Phone with T-Mobile Service

Nokia_3650

"The Nokia 3650 is more than just a phone. But let's talk about its phone capabilities first.

The 3650 is a tri-band GSM phone. This means that it can be used anywhere in the world where GSM service is available, not just in the United States. Most cell phones in the US use a type of cellphone service that is uncommon outside the US, but T-Mobile (and AT&T Wireless and Cingular) use the international standard GSM type service, with a twist : US GSM uses a different frequency to the rest of the world, so you need to get a phone that will work on the US frequency (1900 MHz) as well as on the two international frequencies (900 MHz and 1800 MHz).

Nokia’s BlackBerry Challenger

Nokia_9500_Communicator

Nokia plans to launch its “communicator” in the United States within the next few weeks, challenging Research In Motion’s BlackBerry in the world’s top wireless email market.

The Finnish cell phone giant's model 9300i, an email device for business users, started shipping in Europe a month ago and should be available in the U.S. soon. The company plans to launch the device through Cingular, the nation’s No. 1 wireless carrier.

The Wi-Fi-enabled phone, or communicator as it is known in Europe, received approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission in October, but the launch was delayed so Nokia could make minor improvements Cingular had requested.

Cingular to Offer Nokia 6282 and Nokia N80 in US Soon

...we can soon expect both Nokia N80 and 6282 cell phones from Cingular in the US. How soon? Well, we are awaiting the "official" press release from Cingular on this.

The Nokia N80, with WLAN and 3G, happens to be the world's first phone to feature UPnP technology. We took a detailed look at it back in November 2005.

The Nokia 6282, on the other hand, is a lightweight 3G phone from Nokia's stable, with a new battery that delivers almost 240 minutes of talktime.

Review: Nokia 9300i

nokia_9300i

The Nokia Communicator range has always been evolutionary rather than revolutionary, and there has been very little practical change between models. And let’s not kid ourselves here, Nokia may label the 9300 (and 9300i) a smartphone and not a communicator, but it’s squarely in the clamshell European PDA design, and has been since it launched in the mid nineties. Each model has improved what needed to be improved, but the device has never been about pushing the boundaries of the technology. If there’s a cutting edge to technology then the Communicators have always been a step behind the sharp bit – doing a perfectly good job without risking anything.

This is a phone you will come to rely on. It’s not flashy out the box, it’s not hugely attractive to the shiny first adopters. If you’ve heard of the 80/20 rule in product design, then the 9300i follows that perfectly. 80% of users are going to use only 20% of the features. It can be applied in many ways. In other words, this is a mass-market phone, for regular users.

Review: Nokia N90 Smartphone

nokia__n90

It's easy to mistake the N90 as an upgrade to the now value Nokia 6260 Smartphone - its clamshell, twist and flip design is completely inspired by the 6260. A lot of people liked that design and the rest of them (including me) hated it. The N90 adds a few things and takes away a few as well. First of all, the camera has been moved to a separate rotating unit which also forms the hinge for the two parts of the phone. The camera bit rotates 270 degrees, so you can take pictures in almost any direction without having to rotate the phone. Personally, other than for clicking self portraits, I see absolutely no inconvenience in having to move the whole phone around a little bit, unless you're taking some voyeur shots which you probably shouldn't be doing in the first place. The display also rotates by itself like the 6260, however, it doesn't flip more than 90 or, say, 110 degrees. This means you can't flip the display completely and use the phone in a closed state like a PDA of sorts, if you liked that about the 6260.

Nokia 6270 Review

nokia_6270

The Nokia 6270 is a Series 40 phone available in slider form factor equipped with a 2 megapixel camera (nice job, Nokia!). A GSM quad-band phone, it can be used virtually anywhere in the world. The included FM radio is nice but somehow I like the Visual Radio more.

The keys are big and nice to feel and use. You can easily get online thanks to GPRS/EDGE support on the phone. Another big plus is the ability to expand on memory using the miniSD slot.

Being a Series 40 phone, it is not as powerful as other phones out there, but it does include other niceties like Bluetooth and stereo loudspeaker.

The Nokia 7370 Swivel Phone Released

Nokia_7370

Nokia's new L'Amour collection, which will be released throughout 2006, concentrates on being pleasing to the eye with finely detailed etched patterns on metal trims contrasting leather inspired faceplates to try to conjure up a bit of romantic appeal for the first time in a mobile phone design.

The second phone from the collection is the Nokia 7370, which also happens to be Nokia's first foray into producing a swivel phone. As we've come to expect from Nokia it's still packed with features such as stereo speakers, FM radio, video ringtones and a 1.3 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom...

Nokia’s Kidnapping Prevention Phone

Nokia_n70

Most of us don’t walk in constant fear of being gagged, bound, thrown into a smelly boot and taken to a deserted wasteground for a good pummelling. Judging by Nokia’s latest invention, however, mobile phone focus groups are a far more paranoid bunch.

The New Scientist spotted the Finnish mobile king's recently filed a patent for a mobile to save you from kidnapping scenarios. Once you’ve fallen into foul hands, you begin your own covert rescue operation by triggering a panic button on the phone. Rather than start a screaming siren, the mobile goes into a fake sleep mode during which it will photograph, video and sound record your surroundings.

The info will then be coupled with GPS data to find your location – better hope you don’t get Hannibal Lector - and sent to a nominated phone number. That person is supposed to come and rescue you. Or call the police....

Nokia N91 MP3 Phone

nokia-N91

Nokia's N-series line-up made some waves this weekend at CES, with American users finally getting some hands-on time with the Finnish firm's completely revitalized cellphone offerings. Seriously, if you have written off Nokia's last couple batches of cells, we'd understand, but urge you to take a peek at some engineering that earned Nokia its massive market share in the first place.

The N91 smartphone was a solid fixture at Nokia's booth, accompanied by a set of headphones. The cans were on-hand to let users take a listen to the handset's MP3 playback features. While first look at the N91 may not prompt you to think "iPod killer," but when revealed that the phone comes with a 4GB hard drive with USB 2.0 support for easy data transfer (no proprietary cables!), you start to question the necessity for things like the Shuffle -- or even the nano. Also pleasing to see: a regular headphone jack so you can plug in just a normal set of earbuds or some serious cans.

Nokia N-Series Are The Next N-Gage Handsets

Nokia n-gage

We've known for ages that any old Series 60 handset – from the Nokia 6600 to the Siemens SX1 – is capable of playing N-Gage games, provided you have the right software on board.

We've also known that Nokia has been considering rolling out that software – in an official version – on all of its new N-Series phones.

Well, it now looks like that's going ahead with a date pencilled in for this January. In an interview with Reuters, the head of Nokia's Multimedia division admitted that the purpose built phone-gamer's been about as successful as a Man Utd Champions League run [story here]. After selling just a third of the numbers he hoped for, he's decided it's time to wave the white flag and call in the N-Series cavalry.

Nokia Plans Rival to BlackBerry to Exploit `Cloud' of Lawsuit

nokia

The world's largest mobile-phone maker is courting customers of Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry for a combination phone and e-mail device, coming out next quarter. Nokia is exploiting concern that the service may be shut down in the U.S. amid a patent dispute.

``People are looking for some alternatives,'' Mary McDowell, a Nokia senior vice president, said in an interview in New York. The patent lawsuit has ``been a cloud over RIM.''

Nokia wants to create its own class of fans, similar to the users from Wall Street to Silicon Valley who nicknamed Research In Motion's device the ``CrackBerry'' and crouch over the pagers on trains and airplanes. McDowell says the Espoo, Finland-based company's E61 device will win over some of the 650 million people with business e-mail accounts worldwide by giving them access to messages on the go....

Review: Nokia N70

Nokia-N70

IF YOU want a clear idea of the direction Nokia is heading with its business orientated smartphones, then take a look at the N70. It's probably the best Nokia you can currently get for 3's 3G network as well.
In a nutshell, it's a Symbian based Series 60 handset which combines PDA functionality with an MP3 player and FM radio capability. It's the right form factor to fit into your pocket and, for once, doesn't boast a strangely styled keyboard either. In terms of cameraphones, the N70 is pretty slick since it boasts a sliding cover to keep the rear 2 megapixel camera and flash clean. Nokia claims that it offers up to 20 x digital zoom too. There's a dedicated camera button on the casing's side to fire the camera up. The second, front camera is a boring VGA job which is really just intended for video calls....

Review: Nokia 6111

Nokia 6111

Annalyn S. Jusay of The Manilla Bulletin suer seemed to like her eval 6111:

Because it’s almost Christmas, the Finnish mobile giant Nokia is pulling a few surprises up its sleeve and this includes coming up with a series of slider phones to add to its arsenal of clamshells and monoblocs. The first to emerge out of this line-up is the Nokia 6111, a daintily-designed handset that possesses both the form to show off to your friends and all the features you’d want in a mid-level phone these days, like a camera that is not just V-G-A.

I have to admit I was excited when my editor told me I would be reviewing a sliding handset from Nokia. After all, this brand is not known for rolling out “sliders,” its close competitor from the kimchi peninsula is. Having said so, I was not disappointed. This model boasts of the flawless ergonomics that Nokia is known for, with smooth rounded edges and ultra-light at just 92 grams.

Having fallen in love with my pink-over-white Nokia 6111 at first sight, it was then time to put it to the test. What I did was to tinker with the menu and go through its list of features. Camera with flash? Check! The Nokia 6111 has a 1 megapixel cam which is commendable for a handset of its size. FM radio? Check! It also has a separate music player, media player, voice recorder and equalizer which you can set to your favorite musical genres. Connectivity? Double check! It is rare for a mini-phone to possess both Bluetooth, infrared and USB sync capability but this pretty babe has it. My initial verdict is that if you are like me who doesn’t want a “power phone” at this point in time because you have other gadgets like an iPod and a digicam, then the Nokia 6111 is desirable enough to fit your needs....

Review: Nokia 6682 Phone

nokia_6682

The 6682 is Nokia's latest Series 60, now called simply, S60, Smartphone in the US. It's offered here by Cingular (though it's on a few months hiatus while Cingular and Nokia work on compatability with Cingular's 3G SIMs), and carries on the tradition started by the Nokia 3650, 6620, the N-Gage QD and most recently the stylish Nokia 7610. The 6682 is a phone first in terms of ergonomics and features, and second a basic PDA second with organizer functions, Outlook syncing and support for a strong selection of 3rd party software.

The Nokia is a triband GSM phone supporting both US bands (850 and 1900 MHz) as well as the 1800 Mhz band commonly used in Asia and somewhat in Europe. If you're a world traveler frequenting Europe, the lack of 900 MHz won't appeal to you, but for the rest of us, the triband radio will offer optimal coverage. The unit supports GPRS and the much faster EDGE standard for data, offers a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth and a dual voltage RS-MMC slot for memory expansion. Standard high end stuff. . . throw in a web browser that supports HTML as well as WAP sites, speakerphone, voice dialing and a set of multimedia applications that include LifeBlog, Nokia's answer to cell phone photo and video blogging, and you've got the 6682.

Nokia leads pack, but race tightens

nokia-phones

As mobile phones become ever more indispensable not just as a communication device but as an Internet provider, music player or mini TV, companies are facing fiercer competition to stay ahead in the game.

While few were surprised by the fact that Finnish mobile giant Nokia has retained is top spot as the most popular handset manufacturer in the latest quarter with over 32 percent of the total global market, there was a shake-up among the other major providers, according to the latest results compiled by Gartner.

Gartner found in its latest global mobile sales report released Tuesday that several manufacturers jostled for second place, with Schaumberg, Ill.-based Motorola taking over Samsung in the third quarter with 18.7 percent of total market share, compared to the South Korean manufacturer's 12.5 percent.

"Motorola did well with sales of the RAZR phone, with 12 million units sold by the end of September. With prices falling and additional colors introduced, this phone has grown in popularity and raised Motorola's profile in the market," Gartner reported....

Nokia holds fire on mobile gaming

Nokia n-gage

Focus shifts to mobile music and TV

Nokia is holding off on mobile gaming for a few years and will not be building new versions of the N-Gage gaming phone.

The company launched the N-Gage in 2003 but sales have been disappointing and, according to the company's roadmap, mobile gaming will not be a focus until 2007.

Nokia is concentrating on mobile music for the rest of this year, and next year's main push will be on driving mobile television.

"N-Gage is still being sold but it was not a success in the sense of developing a new category," said Antti Vasara, Nokia's vice president for corporate strategy....

Nokia offers live TV on mobile phone

Nokia N92

Even as the convergence in telecom, IT and broadcasting is yet to see light of the day, cellphone major Nokia is ready to bring true digital convergence through its new multimedia devices. Today in Sify Finance

While launching three new handsets, Nokia's senior management team said many developed countries have implemented policy allowing live television on mobile phone and hoped that India would also follow the same.

"India is one of the fastest growing nations and a largest telecom market. We are excited to offer three very exciting mini-computers for consumers' pockets," said M Montanaro, Vice-President, Multimedia, Asia Pacific.

Two new devices would be available in India and other Asia Pacific markets in the first quarter of 2006 while third handset N92 would be made available in countries where digital video broadcasting-handheld (DVB-H) is allowed in mid-2006.

Asked whether Indian service providers were ready to offer DVB-H to their consumers, Montanaro said "we are keeping a close look at the Indian market... offering DVB-H needs regulatory clearances."

Nokia 770 Review

Nokia 770_pro

First Impressions
After a 45 second bootup sequence, the Nokia 770's main screen appears, showing the RSS news reader, web shortcut time and some other basic functions. There's a degree of personalisation here, but strangely you can't boot straight into the Nokia 770's email client.

The on-screen controls are fairly simple - down the left hand site are three large icons allowing access to the web browser, email client and a third icon for all the other applications. Underneath that a set of smaller icons act as a task bar. On the top right are controls for connected to a wireless LAN, mobile phone, plus a control for screen brightness, speaker volume and a battery indication. On the very top, the main screen title (here it's "Home") is also a drop-down context-sensitive menu....

Nokia N90: The Latest 2 Megapixel Heavyweight

Nokia n90.png

"We can’t remember the last time we saw such brand promotion with fanciful websites to promote a cell phone that does something as stale as taking pictures, but at higher resolutions. Not to mention that it lacks a hard drive, which isn’t all that bad a thing. With that said, it has quite a few attractive features as going for it, but does it have what it takes to justify the bulkiness and the hefty price tag? Read on and find out…

Size and Dimensions: The minute you set your eyes on the N90, the first thing that springs to your mind is ‘it looks a lot slimmer in photos…’ but as you take it out of the packaging, you realize the heaviness of it. To be very clear at the outset though, this is not Nokia’s attempt to produce as sleek a phone as the Motorola Razr. What it is designed to be is a feature packed phone that doesn’t mind compromising on the ergonomics to pack in every last bit of functionality you could ever want on a camera phone.

The camera is roughly 113mm x 51mm x 24mm in size with one of the most interesting designs we have seen in flip phones. The phone opens up like any regular flip phone to give you access to its standard features. If you open the phone and twist the LCD sideways, the camera gets into a dedicated photography mode (both video and stills). The N90 also lets you take photographs with the flip closed but these are only stills and you can view them via the external screen (65k, 128x128 resolution).

The N90 is attached at the hinge of the phone and features an integrated flash, which is wonderful for low light (such as night scenes) conditions, and it flips 180 degrees to even let you take your own snapshot or video..."
