HTC Libra / UTStarcom 5800

htc_libra.jpg

"...Among the other unannounced-announced HTC devices at CTIA this fall: the HTC Libra (aka UTStarcom 5800). Details are yet scarce (so what else is new), but the super thin device will have a compacted keyboard (even by HTC's standards) with an offset space bar as well as an external numeric keypad. But wait, it gets better. EV-DO Rev. A radio. Q1 2007 launch. GSM version inbound for 07. Yeah, we know, we're pretty stoked too....

REVIEW: O2 Xda Cosmo (HTC Excalibur)

O2_xda-cosmo.jpg

"...No question, it's definitely a great device and it does it very well, for what it was designed for. Maybe the lack of not having a BlackBerry history makes it so hard for me to judge here. I'm using GSM phones since 1992 but never had a BlackBerry in regular use. Yes, I'm a heavy messaging fan and I'm sending SMS/text messages and MMS as well as E-Mails every day as well as I receive messages on my mobile phones but I get used to use T9 which works pretty good for me. I've tried the Excalibur for many messaging types like SMS, MMS, E-Mail and chat and it's definitely working great - especially for chats it's working better than a regular T9 keypad since you can enter texts way faster....

Sneak Peak of HTC Excalibur Smartphone

htc_excalibur

"HTC is doing some amazing things these days, and the Excalibur looks to be just the beginning. Integrated Wi-Fi is a must-have, and the Excalibur has it. I don't care what the carriers say about there being no need for Wi-Fi if you have EVDO--there are plenty of places, especially in the United States, where EVDO is spotty, and for those places Wi-Fi is key...

Review: Dopod S300

dopod_s300

"...For someone looking for a flip smartphone like the Dopod S300, the closest you can find in the market today is perhaps the bulkier Nokia N71. It is clear that Dopod, and indeed HTC from their reference design, have tried to strike a balance between style and function. Style wise there is not much to criticize except the dust issue. Function wise, some may argue that many products out there are better. The latest non-smartphone offerings from other manufacturers have already incorporated the PIM and multimedia advantages of smartphones. The remaining reasons to prefer a Windows smartphone over others will be the integration of ActiveSync, the strong email management, Windows-like UI, and the availability of third party applications. Ignoring the absence of a QWERTY keypad, I personally do think the S300 suits me better for emailing than a Blackberry.

dopod_s300_held

The Dopod S300 performs well as a phone, as is highlighted by excellent reception, data, and message management. There are a few issues that HTC ought to address: the lack of RAM, the clumsy position of the microSD card slot, the weak battery, and soft ringtones. It will be great to see Microsoft update its UI, making it look at least as appealing as S60 devices, and it would be even better if HTC upgrade the camera module."

Review: Cingular 8125/HTC Wizard

cingular_8125

"Cingular's 8125 Pocket PC phone, the GSM answer to the 6700, combines a large comfortable keyboard and a full suite of communication options.

The Cingular 8125 is a rebranded version of the HTC Wizard Pocket PC phone. The Wizard is also sold in a slightly different casing by T-Mobile, under the name MDA (or MDA Vario, if you happen to be in Europe) and various other brands. Most of this review also applies to the Cingular 8100, which is a version of the Wizard without an embedded camera....

AKA The HTC Wizard -Peter.

"A reliable if unexciting business companion, the Cingular 8125 will let you take your corporate e-mail with you and surf the Web wherever you go, thanks to its built-in EDGE and Wi-Fi networking. But we wish it were better at making calls where Cingular signals are weak....

Review: HTC Apache / PPC-6700 Pocket PC Phone Edition

ppc6700

"In September 2005, my daily driver PDA was an HP iPAQ hx-4700 and my mobile phone was the Samsung i550, a Palm OS device that was never technically released in the US. I thought that I was satisfied with the combination of the two devices - enjoying the best of both PDA worlds in a sense - but there were times when I really longed to have the freedom of carrying just one device that could do "everything".

Granted, the i550 could operate as a full fledged PDA and phone, but I felt that its screen was just too small for full-time use since I enjoy reading eBooks so much. The 4700's comparatively enormous screen was perfectly suited for eBooks and viewing everything else, but of course that PDA was not - and would never be - a phone. Therefore my interest was raised when I heard about the latest offerings from the Taiwan based company High Tech Computer: the i-mate branded Jas Jar / HTC Universal and the Sprint branded PPC-6700 / HTC Apache..."

T-Mobile to release the MDA compact II in pink

mda_compact_ii_pink

PDAs are great in theory, but in practice they're just another bit of tech for me to carry round in my bag. Having a bag full of gadgets and gizmos may be great in theory, but I just end up fretting about how much it would cost me all to replace when it inevitably gets swiped by some tech-loving thief, and by the end of my journey I'm a twitching, sweating ball of goggle-eyed paranoia. Still, I appreciate that most normal people don't carry around as much gear as I do, and if you rather fancy organising your life electronically, T-Mobile has produced a pink edition of the MDA Compact II, to go with the more sedate grey version. Don't expect this to be the most powerful PDA you've ever encountered - it's designed to be small and compact, not big and butch. Specs include 1.3 megapixel camera, 128MB memory and an SD Card slot, Windows Mobile 5.0, and around £140 price tag.

Review: Cingular 2125

Cingular 2125

Cingular 2125 is not an American incarnation of HTC Tornado but it is a bid different construction - HTC Faraday. This is the first real review of this phone. It lacks Wi-Fi and UMTS but it has EDGE and in combination with availability of flat rate mobile Internet access in USA - it can therefore still be a perfect mobile phone for some people! Read on!

Well the device doesn’t have WiFi. As I stated earlier, I don’t really care. With EDGE I have been seeing speeds between 150-210kb/s. I ran 6 tests on the Mobile Speed Test at dslreports.com. For the tests I selected either the 200kb or the 600kb file size. I think they best represent actual speed of the device. On average I would say I was seeing about 175kb/s for either file size. Sure it would be nice to have the 1mb/s+ speeds of WiFi, but with the relatively low cost ($19.99) for unlimited data on Cingular..

Review : Orange SPV M5000 3G Pocket PC phone

htc_universal02

MSMobile was lucky enough to get their hands on one (also known as the HTC Universal/O2 XDA Exec/T-Mobile MDA Pro) for a review:

The M5000 is a fully blown Pocket PC, there's no doubting that, it’s large in size which will automatically put some people off but give the device a chance and you might just be persuaded! For starters it’s capable of 3G data transfer which means that you'll be able to make video calls as well as access the Internet at near broadband speeds. It also features a full QWERTY keyboard which has some extra keys to navigate the phone's software with.

The inclusion of WiFi is a must for any top end mobile device nowadays and the M5000 doesn't disappoint, 30 seconds after switching it on I was connected to my home network. There’s a program named wireless manager present which is a great touch and makes the control of your networking connections (telephone, Bluetooth and WiFi) really simple. There's a shortcut to the application on the Today screen and its only ever two key presses away when using the keyboard too, thanks to a shortcut....
